This policy explains how SunSide ("the App", "we", "us") collects, uses, and shares information when you use our mobile application. SunSide helps you decide which side of a vehicle to sit on to avoid or catch direct sunlight during a trip. By using the App, you agree to the collection and use of information as described here.
The App requests access to your device's precise or approximate location to:
Location access is requested at the point of use and can be denied — the App remains usable without it, since you can still search for cities manually. If you deny it, features that depend on it (auto-detecting your location, Live Trip) will not run, but the App will not crash and everything else stays available.
When you search for a city, drop a pin on the map, or open a trip result, the App sends the relevant coordinates or search text to the mapping, routing and weather services listed in section 2. These requests carry no name, email, or account identifier — only what is needed to answer that single request.
Trip results and the map picker display an interactive map provided by Google Maps Platform. To render it, Google receives the map area you are viewing and standard technical data about your device and network. The road route drawn on that map is computed by a separate routing service (see section 2), which receives only the departure and arrival coordinates of your trip.
Routes you have already viewed are cached on your device so the same trip does not have to be requested again. That cache holds trip coordinates only, stays on your phone, and is removed when you uninstall the App or clear its storage.
The App requests camera access for the Sun Tracker feature, which combines the camera viewfinder with your device's compass and orientation sensors to show you the sun's direction, and lets you take a photo. Camera access is used exclusively for this feature:
Sun Tracker and the live compass read your device's accelerometer, magnetometer and orientation sensors to know which way you are facing. These readings are processed on your device in real time, are never recorded, and are never transmitted.
The App displays banner and rewarded video ads served by Google AdMob, which may collect and process:
In regions where consent is required, the App shows Google's consent form before any personalized ad is requested, and your choice is respected on every later session. You can also opt out of personalized advertising in your device settings (Settings → Google → Ads → "Opt out of Ads Personalization"), and reset or limit your advertising identifier at any time. This data is collected and processed directly by Google and its advertising partners under their own policies: Google Privacy Policy and how Google uses information from partner sites.
If you enable notifications, the App schedules local, on-device reminders — for example, a reminder before a planned departure, or an alert during a Live Trip when the sunny side changes. These notifications are generated and scheduled entirely on your device; no notification content or scheduling data is sent to us or to any third party. You can disable them at any time from your device settings or from within the App.
The App stores the following on your device only, using standard Android app storage, and never transmits it to us:
This data is deleted when you uninstall the App or clear its storage. We have no server-side access to it.
When the App crashes or hits an unexpected error, it sends a diagnostic report to Sentry, so that we can find and fix the fault. A report contains:
A crash report is not a record of your activity. It is only created when something goes wrong, and it carries no advertising identifier, no IP address, no screenshot, and none of your trips, photos, or saved preferences. We do not deliberately send your location; be aware, however, that if a map, routing or weather request is what failed, the technical details of that one request can include the coordinates it was made with.
Reports are stored by Sentry on servers in the European Union and are automatically deleted after 90 days. Sentry's policy is available at sentry.io/privacy.
SunSide has no servers of its own. To answer a request it calls the services below directly from your device, and sends each one only what that service needs:
| Service | What it receives | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps Platform | Map area viewed, device and network technical data | Displays the interactive map (policy) |
| Nominatim / OpenStreetMap | City search text, or coordinates to name | Finds cities and place names (policy) |
| OSRM | Departure and arrival coordinates | Computes the road route drawn on the map |
| Open-Meteo | Latitude and longitude | Weather, sunrise and sunset times (terms) |
| Google AdMob | Advertising ID and device data | Serves the App's ads (policy) |
| Sentry | Crash details, App version, device model and OS — only when the App fails | Tells us the App crashed so we can fix it (policy) |
None of these services receives your name, email address, or any account identifier from us. Map data is © OpenStreetMap contributors, and route geometry is provided by the OSRM project.
We use the information described above solely to:
The App contains no analytics or usage-tracking SDK: nothing measures which screens you open, how long you stay, or what you tap, and we do not build a profile of you. Crash reporting is the single exception, and it is not a form of tracking — it produces a report only when the App fails, never during normal use. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your data for any purpose beyond operating the App's own features.
SunSide is not directed at children under 13, or the relevant minimum age in your jurisdiction, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can remove it.
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete personal data we hold about you, and to object to or restrict certain processing. Since most data described here is stored locally on your device, you can exercise most of these rights directly by clearing the App's data or uninstalling it. For anything processed by our third-party providers — Google Maps, Google AdMob, Sentry — please also refer to their policies linked above, or contact us and we will help where we are able to.
All requests the App makes leave your device over encrypted HTTPS connections. Beyond that, we rely on the security measures provided by Android, Google Maps, Google AdMob and Sentry to protect the data described in this policy. No method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted at this same address with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of the App after a change means you accept the revised policy.
